Mrs. Portna was born on 11 Jan. 1949 (Kiev, Ukraine). Upon receiving her Master of Science Degree from Institute for Food Technologies in 1972, Lyudmyla Portna started her career as a Technology Engineer working for a leading Soviet Food Technology Research and Construction Institution.

The following 20 years of her technology career she dedicated to the development of the cutting edge food and drug technology lines and implementation of the innovative ideas. This led her to a critical turn in her career when she shifted her focus to the development of viable strategies for protection of the Intellectual Property in a post Soviet legal environment. At that point Lyudmyla Portna co-founded and became a managing partner of the first leading Intellectual Property firms in Ukraine "A. Prigof and Partners" that was entrusted with a significant number of high- profile corporate patent portfolios (1994). Shortly, she received her Diploma in Advanced Studies in Industrial Property Protection from Kharkiv Polytechnic University (1996) and became a Patent Attorney of Ukraine (1998). To augment, she has recently complemented her background with a Master of Law Degree from National University of State and Law (2004).

Lyudmyla Portna continued to manage A. Prigof and Partners until recently when she retained her oversee function with the firm and transferred her major efforts to a spin out firm of D&L Consult where she is currently a Managing Partner. Lyudmyla Portna is an active member of the Ukrainian chapter of the AIPPI ; she is also a member of the Ukrainian Association of Patent Attorneys.

PRACTICE AREAS: Lyudmyla Portna concentrates her practice on microbiology and pharmaceutical patents; she also advises on trademark prosecution, enforcement and licensing issues and has an outstanding record on winning Madrid opposition procedures. Lyudmyla Portna is also closely involved with IP valuation and tax optimization practice of the firm.

Diana M. Portna

Diana Portna was born on February 11, 1979. While working on her bachelor's degree at the Department of Law of Kiev National Economic University, Ms. Portna clerked for one of the first patent law firms established in independent Ukraine after the collapse of the USSR. She was assisting a group of prominent attorneys with maintenance of high -profile patent and trademark portfolios and intellectual property enforcement matters.

In 2001, Diana completed a two year advance degree course in Intellectual Property and Law (with honors) and passed qualifying exam to become a Patent Attorney of Ukraine. Thereafter, Ms. Portna worked in the Intellectual Property Practice Group of Baker & McKenzie at its Kiev Office where she coordinated national trademark and patent filing, contributed Ukrainian chapter to a worldwide trademark clearance project, drafted winning oppositions to provisional refusals under Madrid Agreement and Protocol, provided clients with advice on IP enforcement in the Ukrainian legal environment and otherwise actively participated in a vibrant international IP practice closely interacting with European IP Practice group as well as with in house corporate IP departments of major corporations.

In 2003, Diana Portna successfully graduated from Franklin Pierce Law Center, Concord, NH, United States, with Masters Degree (LLM) in Intellectual Property Law, Technology Transfer and E-Commerce.

Diana Portna is a member of the firm and she is focusing her practice on trademark prosecution and enforcement practice and is involved in trademark licensing and technology transfer issues. Also Diana Portna has a winning record of overcoming provisional refusals under Madrid Agreement and Protocol. Ms. Portna also handles copyright and trade secret matters and advises clients on effective intellectual property management strategies directed to the Eastern European Markets.
